Chapter 17: A date with three people

“Sam! Let’s go shopping in the town!”

Liese and Karen, dressed and ready, burst into Sam's room. Sam, who had been scattered with magic tomes on the floor, looked up at them with a stunned expression.

“Shopping sounds like fun.”

“Uh, shopping?”

It had been a week since their visit to the swordmaster, Amemiya Kuroudo. Over the past week, Sam had been training with Liese and Karen, playing with Alicia and the baby dragon, corresponding with Stella, and searching for suitable magic books for Kotomi.

His relationship with his fiancée Liese was, of course, excellent. They spent every night together. With Karen, although he couldn’t quite understand her feelings, he had grown closer to her. They still sparred, and while he couldn’t win, he didn’t mind the challenge, driven by his competitive nature. His relationship with Stella was also positive. Though he had accepted her as his fiancée, he wasn’t sure how to interact with her due to her status as a princess. Corresponding through letters had been a comfortable way to keep in touch. Stella also seemed to enjoy this arrangement, often sending detailed updates about her days. Sam had come to look forward to their exchanges.

“It’s fine if you don’t mind, but is there something you want to buy?”

“It’s not that I need anything in particular, but it’s nice to get out sometimes. Besides, you seem to be stuck on something.”

“Sometimes a break is important.”

Though Liese had felt jealous of Stella, she had shown no such feelings toward Karen, and over the past week, they had become quite friendly. Whether it was because Karen wasn’t his fiancée or because their sparring had helped them bond, Sam was relieved that their relationship was going well.

“Yes, I admit I’m feeling stuck.”

Liese’s observation was spot on. With Kotomi set to become his apprentice, Sam wanted to provide her with a magic book she could read comfortably in bed, but finding a suitable one was proving difficult.

Currently, his collection consisted mostly of advanced tomes he had gathered during his travels across the continent, none of which were suited for beginners. Although he had used Jonathan's connections to order a few books, they were all rather dull. He feared Kotomi would find them boring.

He had even considered writing a book himself for Kotomi, but he knew his eclectic collection of favorite spells would not serve as a good reference. Like Ur, he had mostly learned through practical experience, which was reflected in his current approach.

He hoped Kotomi could start with traditional magic, especially since she couldn’t move around much.

Magic trends varied by country and region. In the Sky Kingdom, there seemed to be a trend favoring magical firepower over physical skills like martial arts or swordsmanship, particularly for attack spells. Albert Freige, for instance, exemplified this trend.

Some mages criticized the combination of magic and physical skills, considering it barbaric and unrefined. However, since Kotomi also had a talent for swordsmanship, Sam hoped she would master both the Amemiya-style swordsmanship and magic. Nevertheless, he believed she should start with traditional magic first.
